About Mysore

Mysuru was the capital of the Wadiyar dynasty. It is a city of palaces, temples, and gardens. Being a splendid tourist centre with historical monuments and unique architecture, it is famous for silk, sandalwood oil and artifacts of ivory and sandalwood. The city has salubrious climate throughout the year. It is about 140 kms south west of Bengaluru, the State capital, and is well connected by rail, road and air.

It served as the capital city of the Kingdom of Mysore for nearly six centuries from 1399 until 1956. The Kingdom was ruled by the Wadiyar dynasty, with a brief period of interregnum in the 1760s and 70s when Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan were in power. The Wadiyars were patrons of art and culture and contributed significantly to the cultural and economic growth of the city and the state. The cultural ambiance and achievements of Mysore earned it the sobriquet Cultural Capital of Karnataka.

Mysore is often referred to as the cultural capital of the south. The city boasts some of the best Yoga schools in the world. The city is extremely safe for tourists and foreigners. Accommodation is generally very affordable and information can be found on the web. Getting there: Bengaluru (Bangalore) which is a 3 hour drive from Mysore has the closest international airport. There are direct flights from Bangalore to Mysore. Regular trains and bus connect Mysore to Bangalore.
